Can hypnotherapy help with IBS?
Many people with IBS find it can, and NICE, which writes the guidance doctors follow, names hypnotherapy among the talking therapies to consider for long-lasting IBS. A hypnotherapist teaches you to relax deeply and uses calm suggestions and imagery to help you feel more at ease in your body and less on edge about your gut. It is not a replacement for a diagnosis, so see your GP first, and a good hypnotherapist will tell you if another route is better first.
How hypnotherapy may help with IBS
IBS symptoms such as cramps, bloating and changes in the toilet often get worse when you are tense, worried or run down, and the worry about symptoms can then make them feel stronger. Hypnotherapy works on that loop. Many people find that learning to settle the body and mind leaves them feeling calmer about their gut and more in control of flare-ups.
Some hypnotherapists are trained in a gut-directed approach, which uses imagery and suggestion focused on digestion. If you can, ask whether they have worked with IBS before.
What happens in a session
- A chat first. You talk about your symptoms, what seems to set them off, and what you would like to be different. Your hypnotherapist will ask whether you have seen your GP.
- Getting comfortable. You sit or recline, fully clothed, and nothing is done to you.
- The hypnosis. You are guided into a deeply relaxed state, often with slow breathing and calming pictures linked to your digestion. You stay aware and can stop at any time.
- Coming back. You return gently to ordinary alertness and talk about how it felt.
- Practice at home. Many practitioners give you a recording to listen to between sessions, because regular practice tends to matter.

How many sessions will I need?
Gut-focused programmes are often planned as a short course, commonly somewhere around six to twelve weekly sessions, though your hypnotherapist should agree a plan with you. Some people notice a change sooner and some take longer. Listening to a recording most days usually helps. It is fair to ask at the first chat how many sessions they would expect.
Roughly what does it cost?
Private hypnotherapy in the UK commonly costs from £50 a session, and often more in big cities. Because IBS programmes usually run to several sessions, ask whether there is a package price, and whether a free first chat is offered. Check the length of a session and the cancellation terms before you book.
Where it fits alongside NHS care
The NHS suggests managing IBS with changes to diet and lifestyle, finding ways to relax, and sometimes medicines. NICE guidance says doctors can consider referral for talking therapies, including hypnotherapy, when IBS has not eased after 12 months of medicines. Many people use hypnotherapy alongside their usual care and tell their GP they are doing so. It is not a replacement for medical care, so please don't stop or change any treatment or diet on the strength of a session. A dietitian is a protected title and must be registered with the HCPC; if food is a big part of your symptoms, ask your GP about seeing one.
When to see your GP first
IBS should be diagnosed by a doctor, because other conditions can look similar. Please see your GP before you book, and straight away if you notice blood in your stools, unexplained weight loss, a swollen tummy that won't settle, waking at night with symptoms, a change in bowel habits that is new and lasting, or a family history of bowel or ovarian cancer. A good hypnotherapist will ask about all this at the first chat and will tell you if another route is better first.

More questions
Do I need a diagnosis before I try it?
Yes, it is wise to see your GP first so other causes are ruled out. Most hypnotherapists will ask whether you have had one before they begin.
Will hypnotherapy stop my IBS completely?
It is not a promise, and results differ from person to person. Many people find they feel calmer and cope better with symptoms, which can make flare-ups feel less overwhelming.
Can I do it online?
Many people find online sessions work well, because they can relax at home, which is useful if your gut is unpredictable. If you prefer to be in the room, choose someone near you.
Will I be asleep or out of control?
No. You are deeply relaxed but aware, you hear what is said, and you can open your eyes or stop whenever you like.
Can I use it alongside diet changes?
Yes, many people do. Keep following any advice from your GP or dietitian, and tell your hypnotherapist what you are doing.
